Turn Off Your Camera's Lens Stabilization!

Digital lenses today are more sophisticated than ever before, and most have an "image stabilization" feature. If you own a Nikon lens, it is called VR for Vibration Reduction, while Canon calls it Image Stabilization or IS. The On/Off switch for this feature can be found directly on the lens. Basically, it lets you hand-hold your camera in more low-light situations by stabilizing your lens's movement when your shutter is open longer. The feature is fantastic, especially if you cannot utilize a tripod while shooting-like weddings, sporting events, or when you are shooting in tight areas. If you're in one of those situations, you should have this feature set to ON, but there are times when you will get sharper photographs by turning them OFF.

When should you turn this feature off? When you are on a rock-solid tripod! Here's why. These stabilization features look for vibration. If there isn't any there, the lens tries to find some - which will cause vibration! So follow this simple rule: When you're hand-holding your camera, turn your image stabilization feature ON. When you are shooting on a tripod, set the VR or IS to off, and you will get sharper images. One other thing...Image Stabilization is designed as a tool to get sharper pictures at "normal" shutter speeds. While the slow-speed limits may vary slightly from one lens model to another, Image Stabilization is disabled if the system detects a shutter speed longer than one full second. So for longer night-time exposures, turn your system OFF, because it won't have an effect in your final images but will help save your battery life.
