Copywriting Is Essential, Even For Photographers!

You know you are a photographer; but did you know you also need to be a good copywriter?

Copywriting is writing in a way that moves the reader to action.

So when you are writing an email, you’re trying to guide the person on the other side of the email to do something - maybe book a session, schedule a time to select their images, etc. The email has a goal and an outcome.

You write a blog post, content on your website, or posts on social media. It’s all copywriting because you are trying to communicate effectively and entice your reader towards action.

So how do you become a better copywriter?

You have to first know your audience. Who is your ideal client? Where do they shop and hang out? Are they married? Do they have children and/or pets? What do they value? You need to know this information to understand their buying needs and how they align with your photography products and services.

People want to be spoken to as if they are your only customer, not talked at in a crowd. One way to do this is to form your communications in a way that addresses the “What’s in it for me?” for the person reading your information.

Be personable in your writing, not corporate. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. Be that person they can count on.

Use the power of a story to make an impact on your readers. Tell stories through your photographs and bring your reader on the journey with you. People remember stories, so if they remember your stories, they will remember you!

Make it easy for your readers to consume your information. Use short sentences and paragraphs that are visually appealing. Long drawn-out paragraphs will cause your reader to consume too much energy trying to decipher your writing. Break the rules you learned in English class; it’s okay to have one-or-two-word sentences.

Use apps and books to help you write better. Two great tools are Grammarly and Hemingway Editor. Type in your copy, and they’ll tell you immediately what you need to improve. I also recommend reading Ray Edwards book called How To Write Copy That Sells. This is a straight forward book on how to write copy that doesn’t feel “salesy.” Check out this book and tools, and quickly become a better copywriter.
